Scent Work Classes

Scent Work (Nosework) is a fun, fast growing sport where dogs search for essential oil scent similar to drug or bomb detection dogs. Any dog can participate; from puppies to older or retired dogs. Dogs with mobile issues can also participate. It is a wonderful sport for building confidence and focus in dogs that have issues like shyness or a simple lack of confidence. Dogs love this sport because they are doing what comes natural to them - smelling - and they get to be the leader of their team. Doing scent work exercises the dog's mind and develops problem solving skills. These classes are appropriate for the following organizations: AKC, UKC, NACSW and CPE.

BEGINNING SCENT WORK
Dogs will be introduced to odor the first night. By the end of this course, most dogs will be on odor and ready to move to the next level of training. You will learn how to teach your dog the importance of odor obedience, building that value of odor using the Birch odor. The desire to search and find odor will increase naturally as the dog learns the game. Other topics include equipment/gear, handling skills and min or proofing. Class limit of 10.

Supplies needed the first night:

  • Small metal tin with multiple holes that can fit in your hand. (Can be purchsed online at k9nwsource or the k9nose.com. We will also have tins available for purchase the first night (one per team) at a cost of $5.
  • Lots of small, soft treats
  • The essential oil scent (Birch) will be provided.

Bring copies that we can keep. You will also need to bring new copies every time you start a new session. (Previously we did not keep your copies.)

ALSO NEW - ALL DOGS OVER THE AGE OF 12 WEEKS MUST HAVE A RABIES VACCINATION AND CERTIFICATE.
However, you can download a waiver to take to your veterinarian for signature to waive the vaccination for your dog. (Previously the age requirement was 6 months.)

THIS IS A NEW STATE LAW THAT WE ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW.
